Questions and answers

Short answers to what people ask most. The guides go into more detail.

Call (803) 637-8296

Phone answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

How soon can someone come?

That depends on the company and the day. Ask on the call when they can come and how long the work will take.

Is the phone answered at night and on weekends?

Yes. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Does the number work outside Columbia?

Yes, in Forest Acres, Cayce, West Columbia, Irmo and Lexington, and in most of Columbia itself. The service areas page has the details. If you are just outside them, call and ask.

Who pays for the cleanup?

Insurance, a landlord or an estate, depending on the case. South Carolina's victim compensation program does not pay for crime scene clean-up. Read who pays for cleanup.

How much does it cost?

Each job is priced after the company sees it. The size of the area, what must be removed and how much waste there is make the biggest difference. Ask for a written price before work starts.

Do I have to be there?

Not always. Someone has to let the company in and agree to the work. Ask whether they can send photos when they finish.

Can I clean it myself?

A few drops of blood on a hard surface, yes, with gloves and a disinfectant used as its label says. Anything soaked into carpet, furniture or walls, or anything from someone whose health you do not know, is a job for a company.

Does the coroner clean up?

No. In Richland and Lexington counties the coroner investigates the death and looks after the person who died. Cleanup is arranged afterward by the family, the estate or the owner.

Can a business or a landlord call?

Yes. Tell the company what kind of property it is. Landlords may find the page for landlords useful.

Is this a cleanup company?

No. It is a referral service. The company you speak with is independent, sets its own price and is responsible for its own work.

Will someone pressure me to hire them?

You should not feel pressured. Ask your questions, take the time you need, and decide when you are ready.

What about needles found in a home?

Do not pick them up. Leave them where they are, keep people away from them and mention them when you call.

When you are ready, one call is enough

Tell the company what happened, which room or vehicle it is in, and whether the police and coroner have finished. They will explain the work, when they can come and how they arrive at a price.

Talk to a cleanup company

The call puts you in touch with an independent biohazard cleanup company that works in the Columbia area. Say what happened and ask what you need to know. Whether you hire them is up to you.
